The following Resolution was approved by the Henrico County Board of Supervisors at a specially-called meeting at Noon on Friday, April 20, 2007
This Resolution – Honoring the Victims and Expressing Sympathy to the Families, Friends, and All Others Affected by the Tragic Events that Occurred on the Virginia Tech Campus on April 16, 2007.
WHEREAS, on April 16, 2007, Virginia Polytechnic and State University experienced the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history; and
WHEREAS, two separate attacks on the Virginia Tech campus by a student gunman resulted in 33 deaths and 29 injuries to students and faculty members; and
WHEREAS, one of the students who was killed, Rachel Elizabeth Hill, was a resident of Henrico County and a graduate of Grove Avenue Christian School; and
WHEREAS, a second student victim, Matthew Gregory Gwaltney, previously worked as a summer intern in the Henrico County Department of Public Works; and
WHEREAS, one of the students who was seriously wounded, Allison Cook, is a resident of Henrico County and a graduate of Godwin High School; and injuries, are residents of Henrico County; and
WHEREAS, the many Henrico County residents and County of Henrico employees who are proud alumni and alumnae of Virginia Tech are especially saddened and shocked by the senseless and incomprehensible acts of violence committed on the campus of their alma mater on April 16, 2007; and
WHEREAS, despite the heartache and despair that these tragic events have brought to the heretofore idyllic Virginia Tech campus, this excellent state university will remain a strong and viable institution of higher learning and Hokie Pride will continue undiminished among the Virginia Tech faithful; and
WHEREAS, communities from around the world have reached out in this time of crisis to offer support to the victims’ families and friends and to the Virginia Tech student body and administration; and
WHEREAS, the Governor of Virginia has declared Friday, April 20, 2007, a statewide day of mourning for the victims of the tragic events of April 16, 2007; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors wishes to memorialize the victims and offer public condolences to their family and friends, as well as others who have been affected by this unspeakable tragedy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Henrico County, Virginia, hereby honors the victims and expresses sympathy to the families, friends, and all others affected by the tragic events that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors declares Friday, April 20, 2007, a day of mourning in Henrico County as Virginia Tech, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and this nation begin the long and difficult healing process that lies ahead.
